Descriptions of nature and the weather added to the mood and the evil character at the center of the plot eventually got his just due. The characters are well drawn and I enjoyed how Gay employed the landscape and the weather into the story almost as supporting characters.
Like Larry Brown, Gay creates deeply layered tales that plumb the depths of the human heart. There was definitely a lot to like in this. The villain was evil and memorable and I began wishing for his ending at least halfway in My only disappointment was the ending.
