Cast of the gay falcon

A B film produced and distributed by RKO Pictures, it the first in a series of sixteen films about a suave detective nicknamed The Falcon. Despite the almost certainly justified accusations of plagiarism between this and the Saint movies my impression is that Sanders seems a little looser and funnier here than he does as Templar.

I happened upon a couple of Warner Archive collections of these films at a thrift store so I decided to pick them up.

Well, it turns out, there's a whole lot not to like. I love George Sanders, particularly his brand of too-slick, uncomfortably presumptuous flirtation, which seems to fit the character of the Falcon like a glove. Any b-movie that manages to successfully combine George Sanders and Allen Jenkins is going to be alright by me.

The film, well directed by B-movie vet Irving Reis, who would later graduate to bigger budgets with such films as The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxerprovides Sanders with an opportunity to be both suave and funny. Sanders is great as he was as The Saint and what guy wouldn't want to have both Nina Vale and Wendy Barrie fighting for him? George Sanders whose name is Gay Laurence in the series does a decent job, but it is Barrie aided by Nina Vale and even Allen Jenkins in a role he isn't annoying in who lighten up this caper and make the 67 minutes of it enjoyable to watch.

Been interested in this series for a while but this is my first time finally getting to watch one - unfortunately it's fairly listless stuff, with a pedestrian plot about a ring of diamond thieves that seems engineered to be forgotten before you make it back to your car.

I found The Gay Falcon so weirdly frustrating. The plot in this one involves a jewel theft ring and murder which all gets wrapped up in its 67 minute run time. Wendy Barrie is an appealing leading lady and the cast is stocked suprisingly deep with recognisable character faces.
